MELLOTT is the collaboration of Chas Castell and Jessica Mellott, who found each other in the wilds of the L.A. indie music scene. He brings a love of the moody side of rock, for which his homeland of England is renown; she delights in radio hits from her childhood growing up Stateside. Together they create hook-laden, melodic alternative pop songs, showcasing Jessica’s big vocals and Chas’ guitar work and harmonies. Mellott’s mission statement is to deliver joy with their music and performances.
“Shooting Stars” is the first track from their sessions with Grammy Award-winning producer Robert Cutarella (Sting, Joss Stone). The dark love song has a romantic, soaring chorus spiked with The Cure-esque guitar.
Chas and Jessica met at a Boston University alumni event in LA (his alma mater for film studies), while both were jamming to the DJ’s choice of ‘Lady Marmalade’ -- “the music people in the room always seem to find each other,” he remembers. The conversation quickly turned to their favorite artists, including Keane, Sara Bareilles, Ed Sheeran, The Beatles, and more. Fed up with other lazy and crazy musicians they had attempted to work with around town, Chas and Jessica found a unique rapport in songwriting together. “You know you’re doing something right when the music gives you the chills.” describes Jessica, “we get that in every session!” They became the duo Mellott, recording with producer Andre de Santanna (Sheryl Crow, Jason Mraz) on their 2012 debut and follow up EP ‘Princess’ in 2015. They also worked with eleven-time Emmy Winner RC Cates, composer of "The Young & The Restless," on the ‘Princess’ EP.
Jessica Mellott is originally from Frederick, MD and is a graduate of Berklee College of Music, with focus on Vocal Performance and Songwriting. She has worked with notable acts such as the Boston Pops, The Isley Brothers, J. Geils, The Spinners, Three Dog Night, and Frankie Beverly & Maze, and has been a featured artist on many websites, including the popular Zorpia, EntertainmentWorld, and Windows Media Player. Jessica recorded ringtones for Myxer.com for one of their most successful promotions to date, with over 6,000 downloads in 24 hours. Jessica has also been named ‘Pop Female Singer/Songwriter of the Year,’ by the Los Angeles Music Awards.
Chas Castell, originally from Essex, England, is an accomplished songwriter, digital specialist, and serial entrepreneur. He trained with Alan Roy Scott at the Songwriting School of Los Angeles, and placed songs on Sony Playstation and Tiscali. He founded, operated, and sold his own short film programming company, established the first mobile ad network at Warner Bros, and started and ran his own blog for the BBC. His music label – the ‘I Can Change the World Project’ – teaches songwriting to teenagers, with the long term goal of nurturing the next generation of socially conscious songwriters.
Mellott (pronounced ‘MEH-low’) stand by the attributes associated with the French lineage of Jessica’s last name: Virtue and Honor. Their collaboration is one of high spirit, which infuses the music they make and the fans who love them.
